From Sketch to Sculpture: The Creation Journey of Boyi’s 3D Memo Pad

When many people see a set of custom 3D memo pad with a special shape, their first reaction is "How was this made?" In fact, the process from idea to finished product is much more complicated than imagined. When Boyi Printing makes 3D stationery products, we are more like slowly turning a "flat idea" into three dimensions, giving the paper space, structure, and language of expression.

The beginning is the sketching stage. The designer will first draw a rough outline of the note — is it a three-dimensional mountain shape, architectural geometry or abstract layering? The essence of a 3D memo pad lies in the layers. If they are too thin, they will appear flat, while if they are too thick, they will appear bulky. We usually test with 2 to 3 paper thicknesses to find the ratio that gives a sense of volume while stacking smoothly.

Next is the matching of color and paper. Compared with ordinary sticky notes, the color of a 3D memo pad pays more attention to the overall temperament. Boyi likes to use low-saturated colors, such as beige blue, matte white, and light gray, and occasionally add a little warm gold border to make the entire work soft and layered under the light. The paper is made of fine-grained non-reflective material, so that even if it is stacked in multiple layers, there will be no annoying reflection or heavy feeling.

The proofing stage is the most patience-testing part of the entire process. After the sample comes out, we will check the alignment of each layer, the curvature of the crease, and the feel of turning the page. The 3D structure is most afraid of "dislocation". Even a deviation of 0.5 mm may deform the entire shape. Boyi's team often makes several changes at a time, sometimes just to make the top layer of paper smoother and more natural when opened.

The production of finished products enters the machine printing and die-cutting process. UV printing, hot stamping, die-cutting, binding — every link must be coordinated carefully. The parts that cannot be solved by the machine are left to humans for final quality inspection and trimming. We have always felt that even a note can become a warm little work as long as someone is willing to take it seriously.

A successful set of 3D memo pad must ultimately achieve the following: good-looking, easy-to-use, and fun. It is not just paper on the desk, but a small object that can express mood and convey aesthetics. Boyi Printing just gives it a little more space and a little more three-dimensional breathing.
